Book Review : The Last Exit To Normal by Michael Harmon

http://i43.tower.com/images/mm113106294/last-exit-normal-michael-harmon-paperback-cover-art.jpg

Book Details:
  • Format: Hardcover Library Binding, 288 pages
  • On Sale: March 11, 2008
  • Price: $18.99
  • ISBN: 978-0-375-94098-9 (0-375-94098-7)
  • Category: Young Adult Novel

Synopsis:
It’s true: After 17-year-old Ben’s father announces he’s gay and the family splits apart, Ben does everything he can to tick him off: skip school, smoke pot, skateboard nonstop, get arrested. But he never thinks he’ll end up yanked out of his city life and plunked down into a small Montana town with his dad and Edward, The Boyfriend. As if it’s not painful enough living in a hick town with spiked hair, a skateboard habit, and two dads, he soon realizes something’s not quite right with Billy, the boy next door. He’s hiding a secret about his family, and Ben is determined to uncover it and set things right. In an authentic, unaffected, and mordantly funny voice, Michael Harmon tells the wrenching story of an uprooted and uncomfortable teenage guy trying to fix the lives around him–while figuring out his own.

My review:
I never expected to like this book, much less love it, as it's not in my usual reading scope. However, surprisingly, I was hooked from the very beginning. This novel has an unusual theme that allows readers to delve into the story right from the first page.

Everything was fine for fourteen-year-old Ben Campbell until his dad stepped out of the closet and announced that he is a gay. Ben's peaceful world was ripped apart and his mom left. Ben got some counseling, but he misbehaved and rebelled, and after a few times, his dad decided to move to a small town in the middle of nowhere - Rough Butte to stay with Edward's mom, Miss Mae.

Miss Mae made Ben to adapt the ways of country people and changed his behaviour with her threatening (and sometimes real) punishments. Ben became respectful and hardworking after a series of 'intensive training' under the supervision of Miss Mae. Ben was attracted to Kimberly Johan, a beautiful girl in the area. He tried to win her heart, and finally, she became his girlfriend.

Ben found out that he couldn't forgive his dad completely, and his relationship with his dad strained even more after a fight between them. After discovering the Hinks family's secret, Ben was determined to help Billy (Ben's young neighbour) to escape his abusive father's non-stop torturing and achieve real happiness. Things were not so smooth with Ron Jamison, the famous teen-villain in town. By chance, Ben found out that something was not right about Ron and he realized that must stop Ron's aggressive, psychopathic ways to make sure nothing bad happens.

This story made me laugh at times - which I seldom do when I read books, and sometimes, I feel the suspense in the novel, and I always wonder what will happen next. I was really touched when Ben said he felt his father's love for him and vice versa in a simple way which touches the reader's heart so easily and naturally. This book is funny, exciting, touching and original at the same time. You will find yourself captivated by Ben's unusual experiences. In this story, Ben learned of love, acceptance, and responsibility. Michael Harmon did an excellent job in capturing a teenage boy's rage, his rebellious acts and emotions, and how he metamorphose from an adolescent into an adult. This book is a MUST-read!

Here's my big-fat list!
1. My family
2. Books
3. Chocolates
4. Apple juice
5. Robert Pattinson aka Edward Cullen
6. My TV
7. The Internet
8. Spongebob Squarepants!!!

Have a glimpse of what the winner will get :

Hurry up, enter now!

I'm Angry! >:(

I'm really frustrated with these 2 people. I just don't understand why would they host a giveaway featuring their own products and NEVER send the prize to the winner (me). I'm duped! I won a spa set giveaway over at I Am The Princess blog in March 2009, and the prize never arrive until now. The owner said there was something wrong with my address. I think that's how she tried to cheat me by saying, "Oh, it seems like there's some problem with your address and I can't send the prize to you. Sorry."

I may have believed her back then, but hey, I got many prizes from other giveaways. So why should I believe her? If she did mail the package, then why won't it arrive? I don't trust her and I won't trust her. Oh, no.

Another one is a giveaway from Lindsay The soap girl's blog. I won the Travel case and some sample soaps way back in June 2009, but there's not even a shadow of it until now. She made a blog post to announce the results, but I never got the prize. I e-mailed her several times to remind her, and all she said was, "It looks like the original mail got buried deep in my mailbox. I will get the prize to you soon." Soon. And now it's October. Great. I feel like a total idiot right now.

To those who cheated me by not sending the prize and always finding excuses for yourselves : Please, please don't do that again. If you have no money or you're broke, just tell me honestly. And, one more thing - don't ever do a giveaway on your blog if you can't get the prize out to the winner. This will only make the them happy the whole day for nothing. And after realizing the 'reality' is nothing more than a beautiful dream, they'd curse you for cheating them. I'm not going to curse you, though - so thank god for that.

Book Review : The Call of Zulina by Kay Marshall Strom

“No one will come to help you. We all called in every language we know, and no one ever comes to help.”

The Call of Zulina by Kay Marshall Strom

Book Details:
  • Title: The Call of Zulina (Grace in Africa)
  • Paperback: 303 pages
  • Publisher: Abingdon Press (August 2009)

WEST AFRICA, 1787: Grace Winslow, daughter of a mixed marriage between an English sea captain and an African princess, is swept up in a slave revolt after she escapes the family compound to avoid an odious betrothal. As the truth about the fortress Zulina unfolds, Grace begins to grasp the brutality and ferocity of the family business--the capture and trade of slaves. Despite being held for ramson, viciously maimed and threatened with death, Grace casts her lot with the African captives. She is especially moved by the African Cabeto's passion and willingness to sacrifice anything, including his own life, for his people's freedom. Leaning on the faith of her nanny Mama Muco, Grace risks everything to follow her heart.

The Call of Zulina explores the theme of slavery, which has aroused controversies and debates from people all around the world. In this story, Grace Winslow is my favourite character. She has her own scales of justice. She fights for what is right until the very end – even if that means to go against her parents. Her bravery, determination and desire for freedom will capture your heart.

Despite of being an African princess, Lingongo sells her own people to Westerners as slaves in exchange of gold and more gold. She is heartless and evil, and has no mercy for anyone – including her own daughter. Lingongo never love anyone. In her heart, there are only two things : hatred and revenge. She even leaves her daughter to die, and has no intentions of saving her only child. I find her completely disgusting.

All Joseph Winslow thinks about is to marry Grace off to a wealthy but repellent man to ensure unlimited financial supports. Sometimes Joseph's way of conversing is a little bit confusing (he's a sailor). I really pitied Grace's condition. She seems to have everything, but the truth is, she is merely a pawn of her parents, and she is seriously lacking of freedom. Luckily, Mama Muco is always there for her, supporting her in every way.

In chapter four, the author tells us how the peacefulness of a small village is destroyed by slave traders. The scene is heart-breaking...Almost everyone in the village is captured, chained, and eventually sold to faraway places, where they'd be a slave for their whole lifetime. If anyone fights back, a bullet will promptly end their lives. I just don't understand why would these slave traders do such inhumane things to the native Africans. If they were the ones who are captured, how would they feel?

The Call of Zulina by Kay Marshall Strom is an exciting tale which reminds all of us of the brutalities of slavery and resonates with the clear message of banishing slavery in all forms. I enjoyed reading this book, and I look forward to reading the second book of the trilogy.

I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to Kay Marshall Strom and Gina Stinson for sending me a paperback copy of The Call of Zulina. THANK YOU!!!

My Review:

Once Upon A Nightmare actually frightened me, which was a good thing - since it's a horror fiction. Rebecca Parker, an artist who was also Sara's best friend was brutally killed. Her body parts were scattered around her room, or more precisely, the killer used her body parts to 'decorate' her room. At first, I suspected John Druitt as the killer because he's a techno-geek and the killer was someone who had good command in modern technology. But then, when I read about a surprising incident, I quickly changed my mind. I'm not going to tell you who the killer is, and I won't tell you whether I was right or wrong about the killer - if you want to know, find it out yourself!

The murder scenes were quite scary. When I read the part about how the killer 'decorated' his victim's room with her organs and body parts, I felt a slight repulse in my stomach. And when Sara, the protagonist, rocked 'something' in her arms, I felt as if my heart had stopped beating. The chapter where the killer 'prayed' on Susannah Martin also freaked me out. It was so real, so graphic and intense, as I have heard many others say. Please note that there are some adult contents in the story.

Sara's bravery in fighting the sadistic killer really impressed me, after all she's gone through. Oddly, I like the way Sara shouted curses to the killer. I realized, after reading the whole story, a pure hatred towards the evil killer who caused misery to poor Rebecca, Susannah and Sara had been borne in my heart.

The connection between Sara and Rebecca seemed special - in a good way. Rebecca loved her friend so much that she tried to warn her about the killer, even after she had gone to 'the other world'.

Lee Moylan writes in a way that's both gripping and thrilling. I could feel my heart thumping in my chest, I was a little afraid to go on, but I really wanted to know what will occur next, or in another way, will there be another innocent one under the merciless blade of the killer?

Reading this book was like a thrilling roller-coaster ride. Although the violence was a little too much for me, Once Upon A Nightmare was undeniably a very good horror fiction which combines elements of terrifying manslaughter and the art of forensic. It sent a chill down my spine when I thought of the evil acts a mentally ill person can do.

Book Review : The Heretic Queen by Michelle Moran

Merit narrowed her eyes. “She’s seen tonight that you are competition and wants to frighten you away. By telling you this, she imagines you’ll have no incentive to return to the palace.”

“Then she is wrong!” I swore. And suddenly, I could see the future clearly.

I looked at Merit beneath the moonlight and repeated, “Then Henuttawy is very, very wrong.”

  • ISBN: 0307381765
My Review:

The Heretic Queen is a very enjoyable read. I love the way Michelle plotted the story, I love its originality and most important of all, I love her writing style - it makes you feel like you're listening to someone who's telling the story of her life in a simple yet captivating voice which makes you interested in knowing everything.

Nefertari is the niece of Nefertiti and the daughter of Queen Mutnodjmet and General Nakhtmin. She spent her childhood hunting and playing with her friends, Ramesses and Asha. When she grew up, she realized that she had to strive to win the attention and love of the crown prince Ramesses. With the help of Woserit, the aunt of Ramesses, and Paser, her tutor, she succeeded in climbing to the top. Ramesses made her his queen because of her wit and powerful command of languages, and out of his love for her. Nefertari learned about court rules and found herself between the devil and the sea when she learned about a huge secret and was unsure whether she should tell Ramesses about it. Although Nefertari is not as beautiful as Iset, she has many talents and Iset could not compete with her.

Ramesses is brave, rash and sometimes over-confident. His rashness and over-confidence nearly cost his kingdom during his battle with the Hitties. At last, Ramesses signed a peace treaty with the kingdom of Hatti, which was written in both Egyptian and Akkadian. At times, I find his rashness somewhat cute and heart-warming, especially when he rushed into the birthing pavilion to see Nefertari’s condition although it was against the tradition.

Beautiful but cunning Henuttawy, the sister of Pharaoh Seti, is always finding ways to control the gold in Egypt. She even tricked Iset, Ramesses’ first wife into poisoning Pharaoh Seti to ensure that her plan can proceed smoothly. Nefertari called her ‘viper’ without her knowing.

I love this quote by Nefertari : When the right time comes, I thought, then the viper will see what a vulture can do.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read. Once again, Michelle has proved that she really is talented in writing. I was so eager to know what happens next in the story, which explains why I was able to finish this 374-page story (not including the extras) in 2 days time.

On the front pages, you will find a chart of the royal family tree and a map of Egypt and her neighboring countries. At the back, there is a glossary, which I find very interesting. Did you know Mawat means mother? An Egyptian calendar, a reader’s group guide and an excerpt of Cleopatra’s Daughter are also included.

Michelle's clear, simple and skillful way of writing kept my eyes and mind focused on the story, absorbing as much as I could. Reading Michelle’s The Heretic Queen makes me wish that I’d been born in ancient Egypt so that I have the chance to experience their lifestyles and culture. Now, I’d love to see Michelle write a new story of a different era, though undeniably, ancient Egypt is still my favourite.

If you're looking for a historical fiction which is romantic, dramatic, thrilling and touching as well, then The Heretic Queen is your best choice. I hope you'll like this book as I do.

A great THANK YOU to the generous Michelle Moran for sending me this book. Dear Michelle even signed it for me! I'm really touched. I think I'm going to make a little 'something' for her as a gift. I haven't thought of what to do, but I'll tell you what is it when the right time comes. :)

Thank you, Michelle!

I'm Sssoooo Happy!

My BIG exam has ended! It didn't go smoothly, but my day was brightened with a good news! Remember the piano exam I mentioned in August? I was so afraid that I might fail, but thank god, I passed, with merit! All the excitement made me smile like I'm crazy! I got 124 marks in the exam, and that's really astonishing, considering the fact that my sound sucks during the aural test because of the lack of musical talents and some slips and mistakes in my playing.

I really have to thank a few person:
1. God - for giving me courage and help me to pass the exam
2. Mrs. Yeoh - for teaching me and giving me guidance me in these years
3. My mum - for allowing me to learn piano although the expense is costly
4. My good friends - for wishing me good luck in my exam
5. My internet pals - for being supportive all the time
6. A friend who is in the same 'battle' - for encouraging me

A great thank you to all of you who helped me throughout this whole process!
